Forklift Batteries

The Electric forklift battery is a battery that is used to power the forklift machine. Electric forklift batteries are designed to give power over a certain period of time. Rather than being used in forklift, these batteries are also used in electric golf carts, electric motorcycles, trucks and vans, riding floor scrubbers and many more. Vacker Africa supplies Forklift Batteries in various countries of Africa such as Kenya, Djibouti, Tanzania, Chad, Angola, Libya, Algeria, Niger, Congo, South Africa, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Morocco, Nigeria, Ghana, Congo-Pacific, Zimbabwe, etc.

The forklift batteries are made in such a way that they give power to the machine for a constant period of time. These batteries are made with the capacity of high ampere hour. The forklift batteries have many features like energy density, energy to weight ration and power to weight ratio. In comparison to liquid fuels, this battery is more efficient in basis of cost and usage. The amount of electricity that is stored in the batteries is measured in coulombs or ampere hours. The total energy is generally measured in watt hours.

Considerable cost occurs in BEVs with the use of electric vehicle battery which is not possible by the use of fuelled cars. Forklifts are reusable by recharging in everyday basis. The cost that occurs while using machines operated by fuel is comparatively reduced by the use of electric forklift battery. The same amount of energy is used by the battery. The only operating cost is replacing the battery.

Forklift Battery Types

Vacker Africa supplies various types of batteries according to the needs of the users. Some of them are discussed below:

  1. Lead-acid

The lead-acid batteries are the cheapest and the most common type of battery that was used in the past. These lead-acid batteries are deep cycle and lead-acid batteries. In the past, most of the electric vehicles and machines used lead-acid batteries as these batteries are low in cost, availability in the market and use of advanced technology. The lead-acid battery should not be discharged below 50% of the capacity. These batteries require regular inspection and if charge goes below 50% the life of the battery becomes low. The operation and battery charging releases sulphur, hydrogen and oxygen that is not at all hazardous for the environment.

  2. Nickel Metal Hydride

These batteries are more matured in terms of technology and operation. The only drawback is that it is less efficient in terms of charging and density. If it is a nickel-metal battery, then it has long life and can serve you for decades. On the other hand, this battery has high self-discharge, poor performance and low efficiency.

  3. Zebra

The zebra batteries are also known as sodium batteries. This is generally used as an electrolyte and uses a molten chloroaluminate. The sodium or zebra battery have a very low power density. The zebra battery has a considerable series resistance. This battery needs to be heated for use so cold climates become a drawback for its performance.

  4. Lithium Ion

The lithium ion batteries are highly used in laptops and consumer electronics. The traditional lithium ion batteries used to give a fire risk safety too. It also has a good energy density that makes the battery more efficient. The drawbacks of lithium ion batteries are that they have a short life and they degrade by the age. These lithium ion batteries are widely used in labs for chemical works.

The capacity of the battery depends on the type. It can be of plug in hybrids, non-plug-in hybrids and full electric. Lithium ion batteries are usually very perishable in nature and may be bit costly in comparison to nickel metal batteries.

Charging of Forklift Batteries

The forklift battery must be recharged on a continuous basis. Vacker Africa’s batteries are mainly charged by a power grid that is generally generated from natural resources like coal, nuclear, hydroelectricity and many others. Nowadays due to global warming, wind and solar panels are also used to charge or power the batteries.

The electric cars are able to recharge the batteries to 80% within half an hour. If it uses lithium ion batteries, it can charge fully within fifteen minutes.

The charging cable can be connected in two ways. The first way is to directly electric connection which is known as conductive coupling. The second way is known as inductive charger where a special paddle is inserted in the slot of the vehicle. The paddle is external transformer whereas another circuit is fitted in the car.

The paddle is inserted to complete a magnetic circuit that provides power to the battery pack. This inductive procedure ensures that there will be no chance of electrocution as the conductors are not exposed and has special connectors that makes the conductive coupling safe.
